Postgraduate Scholarship Masters/Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship Masters

Royal Roads University is able to nominate 5 applications for the national competition to receive awards of up to $17,500 through the Postgraduate Scholarship Masters (PGS M) / Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS M) program.

Note: There is a single application and selection process where the highest ranked PGS M recipients are awarded the CGS M.

The following student groups who meet the basic eligibility requirements listed on the NSERC website are encouraged to pursue this funding through RRU:
1. RRU masters students in their first year of study, or
2. Undergraduate students who have attended RRU in the current calendar year and intend on enrolling in a masters program in the following calendar year.

A complete application consists of:

  • Form 201
  • Outline of Proposed Research (1 page, including references)
  • Contributions and Statement - Part I and III (1 page)
  • All official post secondary transcripts
  • 2 x Appendix 1 - Report on the Applicant
  • Appendix 2 - Departmental/University Evaluation

Advice:

1. Application Form
Select On-Line Services to log on to the NSERC electronic application, Form 201. You will complete and submit this form electronically with the required attachments.

All RRU’s masters programs are full-time.

2. Contributions and Statement
Part I asks for a list of contributions to research and development, like publications and conference presentations. If you have none, write "not applicable" in this section. Do not leave this section out or the selection committee may deem your application incomplete.
Part III asks for the applicant's statement including research experience and relevant activities. Consider your experience in past work settings, volunteer activities where you gained leadership skills, presentations, etc. Think about what activities you have done that have aided in your preparation to be a researcher.

2. Outline of Proposed Research
View NSERC’s resource videos to assist in writing this application attachment.

View also Tips on Writing the Outline of Proposed Research.

4. Official Transcripts
Order official transcripts from previous post-secondary and have them sent directly to RRU’s Office of Research (attn: Gwen Campden). She will scan and email you one pdf file to attach to your online application. The originals will be held by Gwen until requested by NSERC.

RRU’s transcript will be automatically supplied to the Office of Research. Please do not order one from the Registrar’s Office.

5. Appendix 1
Choose two referees that can comment on the main themes of this award (i.e. academic excellence, research ability or potential, and communication abilities). Ideally they will be well known in the research community but it is more important that they can provide strong recommendations regarding your skills in the award themes. Ensure that at least one of your referees hold a doctoral degree or a PhD.

Suggested wording of request:

Dear [Referee],

Thank you for your kind consideration in writing an Appendix 1 – Report on the Applicant in support of my application for a $17,300 NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship Masters.

You will need to create a login and electronically complete the form. There are instructions on the following web link. http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/OnlineServices-ServicesEnLigne/Index_eng.asp

Please complete and upload the Appendix 1 on the NSERC site by October 21, 2011.

I have provided a draft copy of my one-page Outline of Proposed Research. Would you please refer to this while completing the Appendix 1? Critical feedback is appreciated. As well, I appreciate any advice you wish to provide on its contents as I wish the best possible piece to go forward.

If you have trouble with this appraisal, please contact Gwen Campden, she is happy to help.
