Mad Scientists to Self-as-Scientist: Grade 1 Students’ Perceptions of Scientists

This presentation will discuss the characteristics that Grade 1 students attribute to scientists and the influence of a laboratory experience.  Attributes such as who can be a scientist, what a scientist does and what a scientist wears will be discussed in the context of student’s emerging concept of a scientist. This study indicates that rather than avoiding ‘mad scientist’ characters, which may be engaging, teachers can reinforce Grade 1’s positive view of science and scientists by discussing stereotypical characteristics and implementing activities in which students are scientists.

Everyone welcome!  Please feel free to bring your lunch.
